Next Monday, January 27th, the Functional Genomics and Evolution (FGE) program will host the seminar of Genta Okude (Department of Biological Sciences, the University of Tokyo). Genta is an enthusiastic PhD Student and speaker who works on the molecular regulation of the life cycle in dragonflies. The seminar will take place in the CMIMA Building, in the P31 room, of the first floor, from 10.30 to 11.30h.

Abstract: Dragonflies (including damselflies) represent one of the most ancestral insects with metamorphosis, in which their habitat, morphology, and behavior change drastically from aquatic larvae to terrestrial/aerial adults. Especially adults often show various vivid colors. However, little is known about the molecular mechanisms underlying metamorphosis and coloration of dragonflies mainly due to the lack of model dragonfly species that are experimentally maintainable in the laboratory, and the lack of molecular genetic tools applicable to dragonflies. To overcome these difficulties, I focused on the blue-tailed damselfly Ischnura senegalensis as a model dragonfly species (Okude et al., 2017, Zool. Sci.) and established RNAi method combined with electroporation (Okude et al., 2017, Appl. Entomol. Zool.). To screen for genes involved in metamorphosis and coloration of dragonflies, I performed RNAseq analyses at different developmental stages of larvae and adults, and different color regions in adult epidermis. As a result, we found dozens of differentially expressed genes between larvae and adults, and among different color regions. I would also like to introduce our recent progress on RNAi experiments of these candidate genes toward understanding molecular mechanisms of metamorphosis and coloration in dragonflies.
