The Spanish Council for Scientific Research (CSIC) is the largest multidisciplinary public research organization in Spain. It is an autonomous body affiliated to the Ministry of Education and Science. The CSIC has 125 centres and research institutes throughout Spain.
In Catalonia the CSIC has 17 research institutes and around 1,300 people working on several scientific disciplines which can be classified in six areas:
- Biology and Biomedicine
- Humanities and Social Sciences
- Natural resources
- Physics: science and technology
- Materials science and technology
- Chemistry: science and technology
The scientific activity is reflected in over 500 projects and research contracts every year, 800 conferences and more than 900 publications, of which 70% are articles in the Science Citation Index publications.
The CSIC is also represented through the Delegación (CSIC headquarters in the region) and the Residència d’Investigadors (Residence for Scientists).
The CSIC headquarters in Catalonia are the Delegación del CSIC en Cataluña which acts as the local coordinator.
